Cambridge Audio Azur 640a Amplifier

(...this is the amp that you are looking for.....) This Amp was originally bought in 2006 from a Hi-Fi shop in Cardiff (after tons of research and a day on approval whilst I tested it). Original RRP was 299.95.

I would prefer if the auction runs for the full 7 days, so if this is going to be a present you’ll just have to hang on a couple of days – it will be worth it.

Specs :

65W/channel into 8 Ohms, 100W/channel into 4 Ohms, protection system with no sound quality degrading active circuitry added into the signal path, THD <0.005% @ 1kHz, upgraded power supply, SNR 96dB (higher than the auction database detail above) ‘A’ weighted, Class ‘A’ follower driver stage, polypropylene bypass capacitors, second set of speaker outputs, optional MM phono, headphone output, standby function, bypassable tone controls, low-resonance and acoustically damped chassis, all-metal casework with a solid aluminium front panel, slim-line Azur remote control with aluminium top panel

SummaryI will be very sad to see it go, but I am gathering funds to start my own business soon, so I have good reasons. When I am able, I will be looking for this model again - might even offer to buy it back from you!It is in fully working order and good (but not quite mint) condition, having always been treated well and never pushed beyond the usual 70% volume knob level which I have as rule of thumb for any audio equipment. There are a few of the very minor and expected 'wear and tear' marks, but nothing that indicates misuse and I only mention that for fairness. The rear speaker-wire connections show some ‘wear’ through tightening the plastic ‘properly’ with pliers, but they are ok and not actually broken in any way. Certainly, the visible chunky solid metal facia is fine, and the top cover shows it has been treated well. All knobs, switches and circuitry are fine. There is a protection circuit that cuts in to protect this range of amps, so actually these are almost impossible to over-drive anyway.

There are plenty of reviews still out there for this amp, so I will leave you to check on those. Suffice to say, it is considered a very capable amp which holds its own against far more expensive models. It is way up in the Azur range, with high spec components, circuitry and construction. I have seen reviews criticize build quality, but I have no idea why – sometimes you do suspect that ‘reviews’ might be from competitors, and with the Azur’s price/performance strengths there are plenty of those! I have been using it to drive B&W 601's, paired with a Gale 3090 subwoofer, which I am also offering as separate items (posting this very soon). After the fine-tuning that all subwoofers need, I've reached a real sonic nirvana with this set-up; the components ‘disappear’ sonically and there is just the music – lovely. Check out my other items!

(The 3090 in particular is hard to track down, since it is a large sub that offers lots of bang-per-buck; anyone else with one is probably never going to part with it) Right, onto links and reviews :

Oh, can't link to external sites here, so over to you for that.

Some of the later review are for the "Mark 2" which (in my opinion) was a largely a cosmetic change and a marketing move, though they did address the issue where some people could find that the protection circuitry cut in too easily, buy making it less sensitive. I’ve never found that this is a problem with my B&W 601s driven to high levels; protection is there for a reason and if it does kick in, then there’s probably a reason (grounding of a frayed speaker wires etc…..– fix that first!)
